The Stilwell CHP Calculator provides a free and independent Cost-Benefit analysis with Payback, Quality Index and a Statement of Carbon Savings for natural gas fuelled CHP Plant. Sensitivity of the results to changing operating hours, energy prices and other key parameters may be quickly evaluated by using the useful "slider-key" function.
The CHP calculator has been specifically developed for Client organisations, planners, architects and engineers who are considering the benefits of CHP technology and want to establish the potential carbon savings and financial benefits.
How to Use the CHP calculator. You are already considering a CHP unit; you will have the following data:
- The CHP unit electrical output: (kW)
- The CHP unit thermal (heat) output: (kW)
- The CHP fuel consumption (the net calorific value as quoted by the supplier): (kW)
- The number of planned CHP units: (Nr)
- Your electricity unit price: (p/kWh)
- Your gas unit price: (p/kWh)
- The CHP total capital cost: (£. Est.)
- CHP Maintenance rate: (p/kWh)
Substitute your data and the calculator will do the rest
Use the sliders to select:
- an assumed efficiency of the existing hot water boiler of the site
- the expected annual operating hours of the CHP
You can also use the sliders to see the sensitivity of the results to:
- predicted operating hours
- boiler efficiency
- changes in energy prices
Remember:
If the CHP efficiency is more than 100% (or probably even 90%) the input data is wrong!
The CHP heat and electricity must be fully used for maximum efficiency. Therefore if your current energy bills are less than the predicted savings, the CHP unit is too big!
If you want to look at other units in the same situation, just change the data.
